Request recommendations
Winning at LinkedIn
Requesting recommendations is a great way to make your profile stand out from the crowd. When someone views it, they will get an instant sense of who you are and what makes working with you valuable. There’s no need for guesswork or generalities.
When someone ‘recommends’ you on LinkedIn, there’s more work for them to do. Endorsements are merely a box ticking exercise – whereas a recommendation requires thought and time to write it and add it to your page.
With that in mind, only ask people who you know personally and with whom you’ve enjoyed a great working relationship. It’s considered very bad form to write a negative job reference and the same is true of LinkedIn recommendations.
That said, if someone leaves a lacklustre recommendation on your page and you don’t spot it, it can do more harm than good. So better 10 excellent and relevant recommendations than 20 ‘average’ ones.
Simply ask those close at hand exactly how happy they were by their experience working with you. And once again, don’t be afraid to reach out to key people and ask for their recommendation.
